Why is My 14K Turning DarkUpdated 2 years ago

We want to clarify that the the orangey discoloration on your 14K Gold earrings does not mean it is tarnishing and can easily be cleaned with a polishing cloth.

The moisture in the air and on your skin could react with the small amount of copper that is present in your 14K Gold jewelry. 14 Karat Gold is 58.3% pure gold (14 out of 24 parts are pure gold) and a 41.7% mixture of other metals like copper, zinc, silver and nickel. Any gold that is 10K and above is legally considered “solid gold.” To clarify, “pure gold” it’s different from “solid gold.” Pure gold is 24 karat, meaning that 24 out of 24 parts of the metal are gold. But no one wants pure gold jewelry because 24k gold is impractically soft to wear (and isn’t a pretty tone color).
